Between Here and Now – A Painting About Stillness, Space, and the Unseen

There’s a moment between movements, between thoughts, between one place and the next—that space where everything is still but not stagnant, quiet but not empty. That fleeting pause where time slows just enough to make you aware of it.

That’s where Between Here and Now lives.

This piece is a study in simplicity, but not in the absence of depth—rather, in the fullness of it. The shifting tones, the softened edges, the horizon that never quite settles—it’s an invitation to pause. To take in the space. To find something in the in-between.

Painting Water Beyond Color

The ocean isn’t always blue. Sometimes, it’s silver, stretched wide under a muted sky. Sometimes, it’s heavy and dark, or weightless and soft, reflecting light in a way that makes it feel endless.

For this painting, I stripped the ocean down to its most essential elements—movement, texture, and atmosphere. A monochrome palette was the only choice. It removes the distraction of color, allowing the focus to fall on the way the water shifts and breathes, the way the horizon blurs into the sky.

Without the usual blues and greens, this piece asks a different kind of question: What does water feel like, rather than just what it looks like?

The Space Between Here and Now

This title—Between Here and Now—is about that in-between space. The moment just before something shifts. The feeling of floating, untethered yet calm, aware of both where you are and where you’re going.

It’s the horizon that never quite settles, the way the water keeps moving even when it looks still. It’s the quiet between waves, between thoughts, between one breath and the next.

Maybe it’s a moment of peace. Maybe it’s a moment of uncertainty.

Either way, it’s a moment worth sitting with.

A Connection to Process

I’m always drawn to the challenge of simplicity—how to say more with less, how to let a painting breathe instead of overworking it. This one pushed me in that direction. The softness, the restraint, the subtle shifts in light.

I built this painting up in layers, letting each one settle before moving forward. Like the subject itself, it was a slow, deliberate process—one that required patience and trust in the way it would unfold.

I always want my work to feel like an experience rather than just an image. I hope Between Here and Now does that for you.
