A woman rises from dark, muted water, head tilted back, eyes closed, face turned up into the light. The sea around her is deep blue-gray and still, the sky soft and pale above. She's just broken the surface—water clings to her skin, catching the light, while everything beneath her stays calm and unhurried.
This 30x40 inch original oil painting is the third in my Stepping Into Being series. The first two were about stepping in. This one is about coming back out—about surfacing, catching your breath, and looking up into whatever comes next.
Painted in cool, muted tones with warmth breaking through where the light lands, it holds a kind of stillness that's hard to rush past. I started it four years ago and came back to it this year, finishing it slowly, a little at a time.
If you've ever come up for air after being under too long, you already know this feeling. Becoming is quiet, warm, and a little hopeful—the moment right before you know who you're about to be.
